Back to my chart making! You can only write so many blogs before you feel the need to become creative! So I have tried to chart out the flow of cloud backup. Obviously it isn’t this simple, but it helps give a visual image of how the cloud works.
Often people think that everything is saved onto the internet, but it doesn’t work like that. The cloud is really just a number of servers/computers working together to host/store/run programs. What differentiates cloud services from most server based storage systems is that the cloud uses all the devices as a collective virtual computer. So much like how your computer is built with storage and a processor, the cloud uses other computers to act as their hardware.
The advantage of a cloud storage is exactly one of the things we hype the most, remote access. Because of the cloud you can access your documents, pdf’s, music, videos, etc from anywhere and have access to them. If the connection is broadband you can quickly download and/or upload files to the cloud. It is great for businesses and students. The cloud is great for homes because you do not have to worry about losing data if your backup hard drive crashes. The cloud uses multiple storage devices, so the entire internet would have to crash for you to lose everything (basically).
So, basically, nothing is stored “virtually” or “online” in some type of actual cloud. The cloud just means that anything that isn’t stored on your computer is stored on the cloud.
Now, to work on making a better graphs!
Here is a fun little flow chart to help visualize what online backup can do for your computer. It encrypts the data with online bank grade security, and than makes it available to a storage drive and than backups it up again on another drive (that’s what makes it georedundant). Online backup also makes it so you can backup your phone and access your backups from your phone. Not to mention you can sync both your work computer and home computer which enables you to drag and drop files into a shared file which makes the file available on both. Remote access allows you to access your information from anywhere!
